In June, the Grand River Makerspace team had the opportunity to participate in Grand Valley State University's Advanced Manufacturing Summer Camp—a dynamic program aimed at introducing high school students to the world of advanced manufacturing, engineering, and hands-on problem-solving.
Our team was invited to be part of a special panel discussion where students had the chance to ask us questions about what we do, how a makerspace functions, and how we fit into the larger world of innovation and industry. The best part? These students came ready with curiosity and creativity.
After the panel, the energy didn’t stop. We manned a table during an engaging "Bingo-style" activity where students visited different organizations, asking questions to complete their cards and compete for prizes. We fielded questions about 3D printing, laser cutting, prototyping, entrepreneurship, and how makerspaces empower people of all ages and backgrounds.
At its core, a makerspace is more than just tools and tech. It’s a public-minded ecosystem for experimentation, collaboration, and education. It’s a space where out-of-the-box thinking thrives, where ideas turn into physical prototypes, and where anyone—from weekend tinkerers to future engineers—can find community and support.
We're proud to represent that kind of inclusive innovation hub here in Grand Rapids. And days like today remind us just how important it is to connect with the next generation—because the future of manufacturing isn't just about machines; it’s about people, creativity, and access to opportunity.
A big thank you to GVSU’s Regional Math and Science Center for hosting such a powerful event. We were honored to share our story—and more importantly, to listen to the bold, imaginative questions of tomorrow’s changemakers.
