Community Participation Membership: Making Access Possible Through Participation

Community Participation Membership: Making Access Possible Through Participation

One of the core beliefs behind Grand River Makerspace is simple:

Access to tools, learning, and creative community shouldn’t be limited by finances alone.

Makerspaces work best when people don’t just show up to use tools — they show up to be part of something. That’s where our Community Participation Membership Program comes in.

This program is designed for people who want meaningful access to the makerspace and want to contribute to keeping it running, welcoming, and sustainable.

What Is the Community Participation Membership Program?

The Community Participation Membership Program offers a reduced-rate monthly membership in exchange for scheduled volunteer service.

Participants are full members of Grand River Makerspace — with the same access to tools, workshops, and community — while actively contributing time that helps the space operate smoothly.

This is not casual volunteering. It’s a membership option built around participation, responsibility, and shared ownership of the space.

How It Works

Participants receive:

  • Reduced monthly membership: $32/month

In exchange for:

  • 16 hours of scheduled volunteer service per month

Volunteer shifts are coordinated in advance and may include:

  • Front desk & member check-in

  • Giving tours to walk-ins

  • Tool and space cleaning

  • Workshop or event setup & teardown

  • General organization and support

  • Other tasks that help keep the makerspace running day-to-day

The goal isn’t to ā€œwork for accessā€ — it’s to build a community where members help support the space they use.

Who Is This Program For?

This program is a good fit for people who:

  • Want to be actively involved in the makerspace

  • Enjoy helping others and contributing behind the scenes

  • Need a more accessible membership option to stay engaged

  • Can reliably commit to scheduled volunteer hours

Financial need is not a requirement to apply. However, when space in the program is limited, priority may be given to applicants for whom reduced-rate access meaningfully lowers a barrier to participation.

Our focus is on commitment, reliability, and community contribution.

Expectations & Accountability

Participants in the program are expected to:

  • Follow all makerspace policies and safety procedures

  • Show up for scheduled shifts on time

  • Communicate clearly with volunteer coordinators

  • Help maintain a respectful, welcoming environment

If required volunteer hours aren’t completed in a given month, participants may be asked to:

  • Pay the difference between the reduced rate and the standard membership for that month, or

  • Step out of the program if requirements are repeatedly unmet

These expectations help keep the program fair, sustainable, and respectful of everyone’s time.

How Applications Are Reviewed

  • Applications may be submitted directly or by invitation

  • All applications are reviewed by the Board or a designated committee
