12 May 22 Update
On 4 May 22 we had our first face-to-face meeting along with a virtual meeting.
THANK YOU TO GEN FAB for opening up their space for the meetings and the pizza!
Topics included:
License – We have received our Articles of Incorporation State of Michigan ; still waiting on 501C3 approval.
Location options – continuing to look into options. Ideally accessible from major highways so that multiple communities and surrounding GREATER GRAND RAPIDS areas will be enthusiastic to join.
Communication – Determine the best communication route; Discord channels (thanks Kelly) have successful forums with positive feedback. Google Drives, https://grmakerspace.squarespace.com , Grand River Makerspace Wiki, and email outreach were discussed. Updates to multiple platforms will continue in hopes of spreading the word about Grand River Makerspace.
Community Involvement – Made plans to reach out to: City officials, Chamber of Commerce, Big companies that are based in GR Donors (Steelcase, DeVos, Meijer). Are there local grants available? Also plan to reach out to local neighborhood associations or other groups that may want to get involved. Reaching out to see if there are any local government/community incentives for mixed or light industry.
School Programs - GVSU and GRCC contacts have been made, they are enthusiastic about the Grand River Makerspace, however no commitment has been made at this time for financial support. Looking to reach out to any technical school or apprenticeship program, seeking interest or support.
Banking and Funding – Possibility of setting up an escrow account while 501C3 is finalized. Investigating donations on the website https://grandrivermakerspace.org
Membership – possibility to develop membership levels (level of commitment tiers or working members subscription); start figuring out where membership will be maintained with an app? (looking for an app that supports card reader access)
MAKER Demographics - The Grand River Makerspace will be open to everyone 18+ years of age. Eventually there may be additional growth to support community workshops down the road; with younger makers - however this is a tricky area as the insurance and safety considerations are complex.
Advertising - Get a brochure or flyer started with the logo and mission statement; help to get the word out. Are there any conventions or places where like minded individuals frequent? We have contacted the promoter of the Confluence Festival and have a tentative commitment to represent the Grand River Makerspace.
